The History Of Ethernet
In 1973, Robert Metcalfe invented what we know today as Ethernet. At the time he created it, there were no standards for how data should be transmitted over wires. There were different sizes of coax cables being sold at the time, but they didn’t fit into any network configuration. So, Metcalfe spent his free time designing a new way to send data on the wire. He called this technology ‘Ethernet’because he believed it would allow more information to travel faster than existing technologies.
After working out the basic design of Ethernet while studying in college, he set up a small company called 3Com Corporation to sell his invention. However, they couldn’t find distributors who wanted to carry the new product until IEEE 802.3 (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) stepped in. IEEE began developing the first official Ethernet specification. Since then, manufacturers have made improvements to the specifications allowing them to run faster and longer.
How Does Data Flow Over A LAN?
A LAN works like a highway system where all the cars are driving on the same road heading towards the same destination. When you want a car to move along a specific lane, you must tell that car where to go. You do this by sending a signal down the cable LAN networking to make the car change lanes. For example, if you need to pass a slower-moving vehicle, you can tell it to get out of your way by telling it to turn left or right.
Each piece of equipment attached to a LAN is known as a node. It may contain hardware such as a printer, fax machine, scanner, or monitor. How Does A Computer Connect To An Ethernet Network?

Finally, you must connect the other end of the cable to either a DSL modem, cable modem, or wireless access point. Types Of Cables
An Ethernet cable consists of three main parts:
A GND – Grounding conductor
A TRL – Transmit Return Line
A SIGMA – Signal Conductor
The GND wire acts as a grounding conductor. It helps protect against electrical interference from sources such as radio transmitters, electric motors, fluorescent lamps and lightning strikes.
A TRL wire is used to send data out of your computer and onto the network. There are two different types of TRL cables:
A 10BASE5 cable uses five twisted pairs of conductors. Each pair carries a single data bit.
A 100BASE10 cable uses 10 twisted pairs. Each pair carries 10 bits worth of data.
A SIGMA wire is used to carry the return current. It sends the current back to the central switching station where it is transmitted until it returns to the original source.
There are two different kinds of RJ45 connectors:
A CAT 5e connector looks like a miniature version of an RJ45 plug. The CAT 5e connector is used to create a high-speed communication channel within your building.
A CAT 6 connector has one more pin than another type of RJ45 connector. This extra pin enables computers to communicate at higher speeds.

How Do I Install My Ethernet Cable?
